...on theft and leo slatkes
first off...
credit where credit is due...
this is from warren ellis' instagram feed.
i read his stuff...
he says funny shit...
so, i follow him...
you should too.
that said...
when i saw this image, the bastard had to let out a little chuckle...
because all of these words are true...
and artists rarely adhere to any of them.
we all lie, steal and compromise ourselves in regards ourselves as well as to the art market...
the only artist that adhere to these tenants are the artists who have the financial wherewithal to have this level of sticktoitiveness and depending on how they arrived at that state of financial wherewithal they may be the shining beacon for the other sort of artist who adheres to these tenants and dies penniless and insane and them some shitheel like charles saatchi buys up his whole collection for a song from said artist's junkie spouse so they can get another hit of the crack pipe or some such.
but i digress...
leo slatkes was a failed painter, my favorite drawing teacher told me one day right after he told me about his painting teacher's massive drinking habits...
he painted in the style of his muse caravaggio (read a frikkin book you goddam mook) and he loved the man's command of light and shadow...
he also told me about the volume that exists in a painting without lines or borders as if it were just beyond the smoke.
anyways...
he told a story one day about the carraccis who painted years after some of the high renaissance greats and they outright copied some of the finest works of tintoretto and michelangelo...
leo coined the term"systematic eclecticism" and followed up by defining it as, "yes i steal but, look how brilliantly i do it".
so yeah...
originality is great and all...
but stealing is where it's at

…on a mug's game
the bastard just started re reading neil gaiman's sandman…
and I just finished reading one of my favorite one shots.
Morpheus and his sister death are out among the people 500 years ago in a pub and a guy named rob gadling is telling his friends that the only reason people die is because everyone else around them is doing it and that he has no intentions of dying because its for suckers.
so Morpheus makes a deal to meet him at the same bar every 100 years to discuss how it's going.
it's a very interesting rich story. now go read it.

riding home from the uppa uppa
crisp cold breeze…
head Fulla high life…
the wife texts me…
am I on the way home?
sure I am but this poor crazy woman is screaming at the top of her lungs in broadway…
NO! NO! NOOOOOOOO!
as they try to cram her onto a gurney…
into an ambulance…
the city, she still ain't all that safe at night.
make no mistake, oklasota…
I'm tawkin to you wiscotucky…
the city may be candyland to you…
but I remember a time when it wasn't so nice…
and sometimes I get to see it.
on the 2 train I sit across a crumbling beauty…
she's using…
clearly she is…
I wonder if her parents know where she is…
what she's doing…
who she's doing it with…
and whether or not her parents will need to take that call in the middle of the night…
you know the one.
hello mister and missus…
we need you to come down here to identify the body…
yeah.
my city is beautiful city…
but she is flawed…
whoop…
the doors are closing on the 7…
I'll be home in 10 minutes…
things to do…
lunch to make…
sleep to get.

…on relics
had a good day out today on the dung heap
they have alot of good stuff going on there.
I mentioned a few weeks ago how the bastard may well have had some of the best chinese food in the swamp.
I had some of the best pizza I've had in a bit today.
but let's back up.
the bastard met his sister in law and her husband… the expert for a day on the park.
a day to donate money to a park.
which is the way the bastard likes to give to the greater good.
but while I was there…
I saw a guy with swastikas tattooed to his arms.
it said white power around them.
I only saw pictures of this in rolling stone in the 1990's.
more recently, online as greenpoint has a bit a racist skins hanging across the bridge from me. a guy who prefers to remain anonymous shot some photos of them recently.
when gawker found them, shit went viral.
but here I am having hamburgers one table over from this relic of whatever passes for the national front on staten island.
watching him and his wife who could pass for a slightly more portly version of snooky and his kids riding a kiddy train with his blood and honor dagger on his arm…
making me wonder what the fuck?
it was still a grand day out. the bastard won't let a little racist iconography wreck his parklife.
later for that.
more importantly, the expert showed me where the secret best pizza in the swamp is.

bleed
THEN
on fathers day in 1999…
the bastard was galloping on horseback through forest park…
into a turn…
lost a stirrup…
and did a face plant into a tree.
the bastard shattered his nose into eleven pieces.
I got up and kicked the tree until the nice lady found me put me on the back of an animal and trotted me back to the barn while I deliriously warbled "Christian sands" by tricky.
or…
…a devil in Helsinki
NOW
I work in a cube in a high traffic area.
it's private enough.
but if you're looking for me, you'll find my ass.
and everytime I low my nose the wrong way…
I bleed like a stuck pig.
and then I have to make my way to a stall and stop the bleeding…
hiding out like some fucking coke head in the 1980's…
until the bleeding stops.
I'm kind of sick of it these days.
but it could be worse.
all those pieces could still be rattling around in there instead of being fused together in some shitty jigsaw way.
so glad I wore a helmet that day.

…on watching ones back
the bastard was seized by paranoia this afternoon.
he doesn't like it much
it's been a few months so he almost forgot how bad it felt.
I'm kind of sick of it actually.
when did I become so mentally ill?
it wears one out.
I just hope it's just the voices. the bastard can deal with the voices.
stupid voices.
